Note that CCPA’s definition of “sell” is broad and includes a variety of transactions not normally thought of as a sale. For example, many companies that assist with online marketing will use the data they collect from your consumers to enhance their own marketing databases, and this can be a “sale” even if they don’t pay you for that use. If you want to be sure you’re not “selling” your data to a particular vendor, ask them if they’ll agree in writing to be your quote unquote “service provider” for CCPA purposes. This restricts their data usage to serving your interests only, and will ensure that the transfer is not a sale.
